How to enable 1080p video
By default, Blinder records video participants in 720p. You can enable 1080p recording on a per-call basis if you are on our Professional or Collaborator plans. Please note that 1080p video is currently only supported on desktop and mobile versions of Chrome, Edge and Safari. You will need to ensure that you have the record toggle on before you enable 1080p.
Scheduled video
You can enable 1080p video for your scheduled video call by switching on the 'Enable 1080p recording' toggle in the 'Call details' section of the 'Schedule a video call' screen.
Video now
You can turn on 1080p video in 'Video now' while inviting your first participant by switching on the 'Enable 1080p recording' toggle.
Once turned on, a '1080p is enabled' label will appear in the "Participants' side panel.
How to achieve 1080p in a video call
When 1080p is enabled on a video call Blinder does its best to achieve 1080p quality, however, this isn't guaranteed. Each Blinder video call generally starts at a slightly lower resolution and Blinder then upscales the resolution depending on your network connectivity and device performance. It may take anywhere between 30 - 120 seconds from the start of your call to reach 1080p quality. Once the call is finished, we will only compile a 1080p MP4 if the resolution was at 1080p for at least 70% of the duration of the video call.
The following factors have a significant effect on whether or not 1080p can be achieved:
Strong and stable network connection - you will need at least 20Mbit upload speed on your broadband plan and a stable connection.
Wifi networks are generally unstable so a wired ethernet connection is preferred.
If you're using wifi make sure that you're as close to the router as possible and that there is no other interference on your network, such as video streaming or playing computer games.
5G and good 4G networks may be sufficient too, although these are known to cause a lot of interference due to too many devices being connected to the same access point.
1080p-capable camera - make sure that you're using a 1080p-capable camera. The majority of laptop cameras are 720p only so you'll most likely need an external webcam. Most modern mobile phones support 1080p on both, front and back cameras.
Good hardware and keep the devices charged - capturing 1080p video and sending it over the internet in real-time requires a lot of hardware performance.
You should use a PC running at least an 8th generation Intel Core i5 processor (or AMD alternative) or a Macbook with an M1 chip. An external graphics card is also recommended.
If you are using a phone, we recommend using at least an iPhone 11 or a Samsung S10 (or their equivalents from other manufacturers).
Low battery negatively impacts your device's performance (whether you're on a mobile or laptop), so it's best to fully charge the device before joining a Blinder video call.
Use Chrome and shut down any unused apps - you can achieve 1080p by improving your device performance by shutting down any unnecessary programmes or apps running in the background. Closing all unused browser tabs is also a good idea.
